Executive leadership coaching is an emerging field, and unlike executive coaching, isn’t generally reserved for C-suite executives. Leadership coaching is often made available for all levels of management, high performers, emerging leaders and anyone who has the desire to lead others and become better at it.
Executive leadership coaches help these leaders learn how to better work with, guide, and lead their people. Executive Leadership coaching has much of the same focus as executive coaching. In fact, it is sometimes called a subset of executive coaching.
The goal of a leadership coach is to support a client to gain awareness about how to become a more inspirational, impactful leader with strong communication skills, focussed (sometimes for the first time), on the needs of the team rather than their own.
The Executive Leadership Coaching Process
In leadership coaching process, the client learns how to improve teamwork and communication with staff. At IMLD, this starts with completing a Velocity Leadership CheckPoint, our tailored leadership assessment tool. A leadership assessment tool provides both the coach and the leader with an understanding of the leaders current strengths in leadership behaviours, as well as the areas of potential development.
With leadership coaching, the client is typically a manager or team leader, who may or may not have had some experience in leading a team or group. As the experience of the leader may vary dramatically, so may the content and focus of the executive leadership coaching.
‘Coaching is partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.’
International Coaching Federation (ICF)
Where executive coaching topics and problems are more often client led (with the coach responding and adapting to the client needs), executive leadership coaching is more of a paired process, with both the coach and the client taking the lead on topic as needed. In this way, executive leadership coaching may look like a subset of executive coaching, but it may also look like guided leadership training, focussing on learning and bridging knowledge and experience gaps.
An effective Executive Leadership Coach is both an experienced leader in their own right as well as a qualified coach, who can apply leadership lessons and practical activities in a format and order that suits the client needs and development.
Put simply, an executive leadership coach has the knowledge, experience and skills and teach, train and mentor someone for a leadership role from scratch to experienced leader – and adds / takes out various lessons and activities based upon the leaders current skill and experience level.
What Does IMLD Executive Leadership Coaching Include?

Executive Leadership Coaching Is Based On Trust
Much of the executive leadership coaching process is based on trust and adapting to the clients needs. As a leader is seeking to build and gain trust with their team, an executive leadership coach is seeking to achieve the same trust with the leader, thus demonstrating and mirroring the build a relationship of trust with the management team in order to inspire them to do their best to lead their own teams.
