Leadership Training Has A New Melbourne Home

We are very excited to announce that leadership training at the Institute of Management & Leadership Development has a new home in Melbourne! What was old is new again. Having spent the last couple of years focussing on online delivery – like many leadership training and executive coaching businesses – we have returned to Melbourne with a brand new facility able to cater to some exciting new opportunities.

The Option of Online Or Face-To-Face Leadership Program Delivery

While we will still be keeping the flexibility of the online executive coaching, executive leadership coaching and leadership workshops, we are again adding the options of blended learning (some face to face and some online) and full face-to-face workshops and leadership programs. Our new training calendar is almost complete, providing leaders, managers and small business owners with multiple options to ensure that their learning and development needs are being met in the best way possible.

‘This is an exciting time not only for all of at IMLD, but also for our clients as well’ IMLD CEO, Michael Peiniger said. ‘The facilities at Level 17, 31 Queen Street are second to none – the meeting and break-out rooms are a great size and have amazing light – they provide a relaxed yet attentive atmosphere that provides the right feel for a memorable learning experience.’ The Level 17 facility provides a number of small meeting room and boardroom spaces that can cater specifically to the size of the leadership program or workshop being delivered.

Experiential Leadership Training Returns

One of the signature options of the Institute of Management & Leadership Development’s leadership programs and workshops is the availability of experiential leadership training. ‘Experiential leadership training is included in many of our leadership programs and workshops and provides learners with an ‘immersive’ leadership experience. It is similar to a pilot simulator for aircrew – we have created a number of leadership scenarios for teams to challenge their leadership skills and behaviour in real time.’ Peiniger says. ‘After being briefed on an activity, a leaders has to communicate and brainstorm with their team, develop a plan, and implement action the best way they can with the time, resources and team available to them. The new facilities at Level 17 provide us with such flexibility – not only to provide great experiential training, but also the space and environment to create great reflection opportunities and debriefs with leaders in smaller one-on-one spaces’.

The experiential leadership training programs runs across the Executive Leadership Program, Emerging Leaders Program as well as the Diploma of Leadership & Management. ‘Participants in our leadership programs want to gain more than knowledge’ Peiniger said. ‘They are looking for the opportunity to test and practice new skills in a challenging environment, as well as get some very practical tips and options for doing things better in the future, which our experiential training and skilled facilitators can provide’.

Leadership Training and Executive Coaching At Its Finest

Finding the right environment to learn and grow is important for leadership development and executive leadership coaching. ‘For many leaders, the online environment has provides a level of comfort and security to develop and explore their leadership strengths and weaknesses, which can often be challenging things to tackle. For others, it has felt restrictive and confining, and have been looking for an opportunity to learn with groups, have meaningful discussion both in and out of the learning environment, and feel connected to the people around them again. We are delighted to say that we can cater to both groups again with the facilities we have in the Melbourne office’ Peiniger says.

Small Businesses Are The Heartbeat of a Community

I was trying to think on a post that inspired / felt positive this morning upon the announcement of yet another lockdown. I couldn’t find it. Small businesses are the heartbeat of a community – seems to fit the bill.

Just prior to lockdown, I found this written on the wall of a local pub and it resonated with me. I am lucky enough to work with many leaders of small businesses – the lifeblood of the community.

While I know that I will get through this lockdown – and whatever happens next – I know that the emotions and frustrations of many of us are different. The impact on us, as well as our small businesses, is just as varied as the people that live here.

I just wanted to reach out and say that if you are struggling with this latest lockdown, and just need someone to talk to or vent your frustrations with, DM me or follow my contact details and contact – you don’t have to deal with this on your own.

Leadership Is All About Team Trust and Performance

Team trust and performance. For a team to perform at a high level, the team needs to trust the leader as much as the leader trusts the team. A break down on either side of this trust equation results in poorer performance. High Performing businesses have developed a strong sense of trust between leader and team – a truly symbiotic relationship – which drives performance.

Leadership Role

In relation to the team, the leaders role is to provide guidance, coaching, energy and clarity when the team needs it. The key phrase here is ‘when the team needs it’. As a leader, one of the hardest lessons to learn is when to apply your will / drive / energy / purpose to the team, and when to provide the team the opportunity to provide those things for themselves. If the leader is only focussed on themselves, they can ‘over apply’ each of these traits, to the annoyance of the team.

The leader places a level of trust in the team when providing each of the listed behaviours – guidance, coaching, energy and clarity. They all take time and effort, and the leader needs to know that those efforts won’t be wasted. One of the key roles of a leader is to provide the team these behaviours when they can’t provide it for themselves – there needs to be a willingness on behalf of the leader to provide it, and a willingness on behalf of the team to accept it. An unwillingness from wither party will result in a lack of trust and poorer performance.

When a leader can’t (or won’t) provide these behaviours for the team, the team loses trust in the leader – which also affects performance. In this way, a high performing team has a truly ‘symbiotic’ relationship with each other – they help improve and sustain each others roles.

Questions: As a leader, team leader, supervisor, manager or small business owner:

  • Do you provide guidance on personal performance and role to your team members?
  • Do you coach your team members on how they can improve, as well as how they can maintain their strengths?
  • Is your energy and enthusiasm easily ‘caught’ by your team? Is your energy infectious? If so, is it raising your team up or pulling them down?
  • Do you provide role clarity and provide your leader with an understanding of their role in the team and / or business?

If you had to think hard on any of these questions, you could be doing more to improve the trust and performance of your team relationship.

Teams Role

Just as the leader has input into the teams performance, the team plays a crucial role in the leaders performance – a role that is often forgotten or overlooked.

The team provides the leader support, feedback, energy and clarity when the leader needs it. Leaders aren’t superheroes – they are not and endless supply of energy and positivity – there are times when circumstances can get the down (just like team members). When this happens, high performing teams can fill the void and provide energy, support and feedback to the leader.

Teams that don’t do this demonstrate a lack of trust in the leader, which impacts both the performance of the leader and team. Again, the role of the team and leader is symbiotic – they help improve and sustain each others role.

Questions: As a team member, colleague or peer:

  • Do you provide support to your team leader in the form of encouragement or assistance?
  • Do you provide feedback to your leader on what they did well and what they could improve on?
  • Is your energy and enthusiasm easily ‘caught’ by your leader? Is your energy infectious? If so, is it raising your leader up or pulling them down?
  • Do you provide role clarity and provide your team with an understanding of their role in the team and / or business?

If you had to think hard on any of these questions, you could be doing more to improve the trust and performance of your leadership relationship.

What impact are you having on the team trust and performance of your team?

Further Thoughts

Do you know the impact you have on your leader and / or team?

If you are unsure of your impact on your leader / team, perhaps you should complete the Velocity Leadership CheckPoint? 25 behavioural leadership traits, focussed in 5 distinct leadership capabilities – a ‘must know’ for any leader or team looking to drive high performance. Melbourne Leaders, Managers and Supervisors – Well done!

Well done Melbourne leaders, managers and supervisors! I know lockdown is hard – both emotionally, physically and financially, but the work is paying off (from 700 cases a day to less than 200). Still some more work to be done. Thank you to the front line workers, nurses and doctors.
Thank you also to the Melbourne supervisors, team leaders, managers, small business owners and senior leaders in business as you navigate this pandemic not only for yourself, but for your team and business as well. Looking after a team takes something, and it is taking something right now with the response to this pandemic – just know that your efforts are appreciated, noticed and acknowledged.
