The Function Of Leadership Is NOT To Produce More Leaders

Unpopular Opinion: The FUNCTION of leadership is NOT to produce more leaders. The FUNCTION of Leadership is to SERVE AND LEAD YOUR PEOPLE WELL. The function is to provide a clear vision, develop a plan, communicate clearly, are for your team, develop their skills and create an environment for good work.

A recent post from Leadership First stated below:

The Function of Leadership
The Function Of Leadership Should Be To Lead Well

If, through that process and your example, you have team members that look to develop their skills further to become a leader – fantastic! But that is not your function – it is a wonderful byproduct of your function.
To state that your function is to produce more leaders is to ignore 80-90% of your team – the people that you lead!
Imagine stating that the function of money is to produce more money, or that the function of a Royal Family is to produce more Royals. Some may agree – yet the purpose of both of those things is to do more that replicate itself – it is to SERVE a higher purpose and create something bigger than itself,
If you see the function / focus of your leadership is to produce more leaders, you are doing yourself – and the people you are supposed to serve – a major disservice.

Great Leaders Know How To Create Positive Intentions At Work

Great leaders know how to create the right environment for themselves to thrive. What intention are you bringing to work today? Are you aware of what you are bringing?
Is it: (READ MORE)
? ‘I just have to get through today’
? ‘It is wet and raining, just like my mood’
? ‘Another boring meeting I just have to get through’
? ‘I’m swamped in work’

These intentions attract exactly what you are looking for – and importantly they filter out other emotions / behaviours / examples / opportunities that don’t fit the narrative.
Unconsciously, we can let these negative / less efficient behaviours rule the way in which we work.
The wonderful thing about being human though, is that we can control how we CHOOSE to think about something – which in turn can impact our mood and how we see things – even what we see.
Creating your intention can be a simple way of changing the mood – your mood – at work.

Your intention could be:
⭐️ ‘I will get Project X completed today’
⭐️ ‘I’m glad it is raining outside today, I can now focus on XXX’
⭐️ ‘What small gem of information can I get from this meeting that will be useful?
⭐️ ‘Today I am breaking down these rocks to pebbles and sand and moving things forward’
Our brain is an incredibly powerful tool – when we point it in the right direction and set a clear intention for HOW we will approach the day.

Will creating an intention magically change the day around you? No. You will still be at work, and you will still have things to do. But it will change how you see that work, how you respond to the people around you (and how they respond back), how you feel about that work – and open the opportunity to feel satisfied by what you have achieved, rather than what you have missed.

You may also have the mindset to actually ‘see’ what you have been missing and filtering out from your day.
So, what is your intention for today?

Will you consciously bring out the nest in yourself, or unconsciously pull yourself down? The cool thing is it is your choice.

Great Leaders Listen to Understand, Not Just To Reply

Great leaders listen to understand, not just to reply. The quick responses of ‘Yes, but……….’, ‘I hear you, but…….’ are simple examples of listening to reply rather than understand.
Simple statements – almost reflex – and they scream that ‘I’m right’ – which means that you are wrong.
If you listen for it – in yourself and in others – you can see when someone is listening only to respond and provide their point of view rather than listening to the other person.
A skill that is fantastic for debating – seeking to listen to the ‘opponent’ just to rip their argument apart – surprisingly (!), isn’t very useful for having conversations with others.
This behaviour can be destructive as a leader – it limits the ideas available to you and over time ensures that your team provides less and less – because you don’t want to actually listen.
Listening – actually listening – is a skill. It can take effort not to launch in with a counter-point or argument; but if you want to be a good leader of people, then it is a skill worth learning.
Perhaps it starts with realising that you aren’t always the smartest in the room and perhaps, just perhaps, aren’t the only one with good ideas? ?
Listening to understand, listening to actually hear an alternative idea or view, is so much more effective for sustained leadership than just listening to reply. Don’t learn it, and the only opinion you may be listening to is your own.

Best Small Business Coaching Firm in Australia!

Thank you Corporate Vision – we couldn’t be happier to be announced as the Best Small Business Coaching Firm in Australia in 2022!

We are very fortunate to be working with some incredibly passionate leaders, managers and owners within some of Australia’s best small, medium and family businesses. Leaders that are willing to learn, to be coached, to share with others and put their learning into practice – they are a pure joy to work and learn with.

Thank you to the leaders and small business owners that we have had the privilege of coaching, training and facilitating through our Executive Leadership Coaching and Leadership Programs for 2022.

EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP COACHING

Are you looking to become a leader that others will follow? Take a look at our Executive Leadership Coaching and Leadership Skills Workshops as a great place to start.

Here is what some of our recent clients experienced through the coaching process:

‘It took me a while to find a leadership coach I wanted to work with, and I feel incredibly lucky to have come across Michael, who has the right mix between personable but professional and supportive but honest feedback. At first I knew there were areas I wanted to work on, but I couldn’t put my finger on what they were. Michael not only helped me identify these areas, but then grounded and rooted me in my own values, strengths and purpose which has helped realign me with my own goals and direction. The tools Michael introduced to me were so simple and effective I can recall them daily allowing me to put them into practise instantly when I recognise the disruptive behaviours in myself, my team and others around me. Another great benefit was being able to call Michael to talk through difficult problems that arose and he would always offer a very calm and experienced perspective that has helped balance my own thought processes in a very turbulent time in retail. Would definitely recommend working with Michael if you are looking for a clear, compassionate and effective leadership coach.

Bryony Bennett, Design Manager, Target

I have been working with Michael for the last five months through his executive coaching program. During this time Michael has operated as a wingman for me – helping me see things that I would otherwise miss, helping me see things on the horizon and helping me coach and develop my own team. Not only has Michael helped me develop professionally, he has also helped me create more time and space to spend with my young family. I cannot recommend Michael highly enough for anyone considering an executive coach.’

James Ryall, Chief Scientific Officer, Vow

‘Working with IMLD couldn’t have come at a better time in my career. Taking the time and space to work with a coach regularly has enabled me to raise my management skills and focus on the important areas of development. Michael provides support at a high level but also with the day-to-day tricky things that we all have to tackle, and its makes a huge difference knowing you have that support to call on.’

Why Would You Do Leadership Training Right Now?

Why would you do leadership training right now? Because the expectations of leaders – from their teams and from society in general – has increased dramatically.
There is now an expectation of needing to share the reason why, be responsible for themselves and for others, as well as being honest, authentic in their demeanour and caring for the welfare of their team in a way that is actually appreciated by the team.

Managing this blend of skills, emotions and behaviours takes some effort – not only to get the right balance, but to feel confident in yourself that you are meeting your and your team’s expectations.
The thing is – you don’t have to do it alone.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BL34rIMSce4

Why Leadership Training?

Every leader should have a ‘tune up’ or a check in every now and again – to ensure that you are leading with best practice, or even just to ask yourself 4 questions:

  • What should I start doing?
  • What should I stop doing
  • What should I do more of?
  • What should I do less of?

Answering these questions questions against the context of self, team, business and culture often comes back to leadership.
Are you comfortable in your leadership skills? Are you the most efficient and effective leader you can be?
If you have any doubt, it might be time for some leadership training or leadership coaching to get you back to peak performance.

Has Task Volume Overwhelmed Your Leadership Capacity?

Has the volume of tasks that you need to complete overwhelmed your leadership capacity at present? Have you ever felt that busy, that you actually can’t get anything done? Scanning from left to right, looking at all the tasks and actions to complete, but rendered motionless because of feeling of overwhelm (which can then look like procrastination)?
Sometimes it takes someone else to notice this for you.
Because chances are, the people around you have noticed this before you have.
Sometimes you just need to put your hand up and say I need some help with this – I can’t see the wood from the trees.

Leadership Capacity

Take that moment to sit back and review and scan the tasks. Avoid the need to get in and ‘do it!’ – just for a few minutes – to sort out some basic priorities (based on time, need, time available, due date) and put a little bit of order to the chaos.
I am a huge fan of a ‘to do’ list – even if it is just to get all of the random thoughts out of your head and onto paper.
If you can’t see the wood from the trees or feel overwhelmed with too many tasks – you aren’t alone. It isn’t a bad thing – just a learning thing. Responsibility (generally a great leadership trait) can cause us drama when it is overused.
If you are struggling with overwhelm – reach out – we can help you see the wood from the trees and help you take that next step with confidence.

Leaders don’t need to be perfect!

Leaders don’t need to be perfect! The need and desire for perfection not only stops many amazing potential leaders from becoming leaders, it also stops current leaders from trying or doing something new.
Team members aren’t looking for perfection – they are looking for someone real, someone who cares about them and their wellbeing, and who is honest and open enough to admit to mistakes. Teams and individuals will forgive a lot if their leader can openly take responsibility for their mistakes, and work and learn to be better.
So much of leadership is about CHOICE – the choice to learn, the choice to listen and the choice to be real. OR the choice to seek perfection at all costs, the choice to blame and make excuses, and the choice to ‘pass the buck’ and let others handle the load.
To become the leader that everyone wants to work for – start with doing your best, openly seeking feedback, praising behaviour as you see it and taking all opportunities as learning opportunities.

4 Additional Tips For Leaders To Reduce Stress and Overwhelm

What are some additional tips for leaders that can help to reduce stress and overwhelm? So, I’ll come up with a couple, but one I already mentioned was the ‘Creating some hour meetings for yourself in your calendar’ So that you can actually tasks done, rather than having to repeat, repeat, repeat, with constant interruptions.

Tip 1 For Leaders – Your Own Meetings

So, one, being kind to yourself and making sure you’re creating some hour meetings to get things done. The second things I’ve noticed with a lot of leaders is that they don’t have all of their tasks or all of their ‘to-do’ in the one place. It might be on a written list that they’ve got down, some Post-It notes, here, there, and everywhere. A checklist, or a Slack Meeting that has some tasks there. Their email has got the same thing. And all of their tasks are everywhere. So one suggestion to take some control back would be to grab all of those things, and put them in the one place. Whether it’s an electronic diary, whether it’s a hardcopy diary, whatever, it doesn’t really matter, so long as it’s actually in the one place… and you can take it with you to where you happen to be working.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xHpbTsx6C8

Alright, so if you’re working from home, and you’re working at the office, that you can use the same thing. Alright, so I think that would be the second tip; pulling all of your tasks into one spot, so as you’re thinking on something, or it’s there, it always ends up in the one place. So, you’re not going to miss anything.

I think part of the stress of feeling overworked, is having to be thinking of 5 different places, or worse, just having every task in your head! Alright, so that’d be second tip.

Tip 3 For The Leaders – Daily Catch Up

The third tip, would be, actually just having a daily catch up with all of your team. Whether that is really short one-on-ones, or whether it’s as a group. Having a daily catch up, no longer than 10 minutes, where people know it’s consistent, and they can bring out any of their issues or discussion points to that 10 minute discussion. The purpose of this is, when it’s consistent, and it’s regular, people just know they can have access to you, and ask for responses to questions, get signatures, answers, at a consistent time each day, rather than having to constantly interrupt and harass you throughout the day for small little things, they might just carry it over and do it in one hit. Which gives you some more clear airtime.

And the last one would probably be coming back to how you’re managing tasks again… One thing I’ve certainly noticed with, the difference between leaders that are managing things really well, and not, is how they go about managing those tasks. Whether ‘A’, They’ve got them all listed in the one spot, but 2, the really good managers at this have prioritised what they need to do, whether you think if this as Priority 1, 2, 3. Small, Medium, Large… I think  of it as Rock, Pebbles, Sand.

Like a Steven Covey type of idea, but also being able to add how long you think the task is going to take. This is something I see many to do lists just missing. And leaders particularly that those that like to get lots of things done, seems to match up with being chronic under-estimators of time. So, if this is going to take 15 minutes or half an hour, just noting that against the task. So if you are short of time, you’re not taking on something that’s too big for the time that you’ve got allocated, and you’re repeating, repeating.

So they’d be my suggestions for overwork. So what was it? Setting meetings for yourself. Putting all your to-do list items in the one spot. Creating short meetings, regular meetings for your team, every day. And then, with your to-do list, making sure that you’re either allocating how much time you think it’s going to take, or prioritising it, in some way, shape or form. They’d be the quick, easy wins for destressing a leaders life.

8 Signs You’re A Good Leader and Manager

Being a good leader or manager can be difficult in any organisation and small business. There are many people, projects, and problems to keep track of. You may have days where you question your skills or even wonder how to be a good manager.

8 Signs That You Have the Qualities of Good Leadership

When you go home in the evening, reflect on how you handled the events of the day. Also, strive to take notice of what you do in the moment so you can identify any places for improvement.

  1. You Focus on Teamwork

There’s no “i” in “team!” A respectable leader uses “we” language and navigates progress in the context of their fellow employees. They celebrate successes as a group and expect everyone to step up in the face of failure. Managers who cultivate a culture of collaboration in their business increase job satisfaction and productivity.

  1. You Have Healthy Boundaries

Quality leaders know how to separate personal and professional relationships. Instead of letting emotions cloud their judgment, they strive to ensure mutually respectful relationships with all employees. They see the value of a proper work-life balance and always check on their team for signs of burnout.

  1. You Show Your Care For Each Team Member

The best managers work to establish trust and connection with everyone in the office. They do their best to remember hobbies, family members’ names, and exciting events. Well-loved leaders aren’t afraid to be vulnerable with their staff about their lives and want people to see them as more than a “boss.” With this in mind, they also refrain from oversharing and prying into the intimate details of others’ lives.

Great Leaders and Managers Have a Big Impact On Their Teams
Great Leaders and Managers Have a Big Impact On Their Teams
  1. You’re Willing to Admit Your Mistakes

A manager who is humble enough to admit when they’re wrong has one of the most valuable qualities of a good leader. They are always willing to apologize and ask for help. This behavior encourages other team members and makes them feel more comfortable owning up to their mistakes, creating a more productive environment.

  1. You Pay Attention to Staff Feedback

A leader who listens to suggestions and complaints is vital to the success of a business. A good manager takes the initiative to implement meaningful changes in their workplace, creating a safe, comfortable space for all employees.

  1. You Acknowledge Wins

It can be exhausting for a team to only hear about their mistakes and failures. Celebrating wins is critical to good morale in any company. Acknowledging success can make your team members feel proud, satisfied, and appreciated, encouraging them to keep working hard!

  1. You Demonstrate Trust

No one likes a micromanager. Instead of looking over your employees’ shoulders while they work on a project, delegate and let go! Let your team know you’re there if they need help, but trust that they know what they’re doing. This attitude encourages your staff to grow and do their best while simultaneously lightening your workload!

  1. You Understand Your Strengths

Self- reflection is a critically important tool for a leader, and the ability to understand your strengths and your limitations is of great benefit to you and your team. Understanding your strengths ensures that you place yourself in situations where your strengths can be utilised, and you use your team’s strengths for area you are less comfortable / able in – without fear of how this will be seen.

A Good Leader and Manager Always Strives to Be Better

Maybe you already know how to be a good manager, or perhaps there are a few things you need to improve. Tools such as leadership training and assessments can help build a leadership profile to help you better understand your strengths and weaknesses. The truth is that management positions require much hard work, but if you put in the time and effort to build a positive work environment for your staff, you will find your career incredibly rewarding.

What Is The Best Thing A Leader Can Do Right Now? – VIDEO

What is the best thing a leader can do right now? The best thing to do is to complete a leadership assessment. The most important thing a leader can do right now is actually get a gauge on:

  • what they are really good at,
  • what they are not good at, and
  • where they can develop specifically around those skill sets.

So, how they can strengthen what they are already good at, and with what they are not good at, what they can, what they build to work on that.

In the

In the Velocity Leadership CheckPoint, one of the key measures is being able to see how responsibility you are versus how accountable you are. From that, you learn what actions that you take for yourself, and what actions you take for your team.

In addition, you can look at other behaviour trait pairings, such as how good an active listener you are versus how good is your verbal communication. ie. Are you speaking more to your team than listening, or are you always listening and holding back from sharing your thoughts.

To be able to get that level of detail, and know very specifically – at this time – what you need to develop your leadership skills right now – that would be the best thing that a leader could do.

How to Choose An Executive Leadership Coach – Question 9. How Will You Challenge Me (and Yourself)?

Choosing an effective Executive Leadership Coach can be difficult if you haven’t thought though the best way to assess who you are getting. That is why we devised ‘The 9 Questions To Ask When Hiring An Executive Leadership Coach’. This is the last question – How will you challenge me (and yourself) through the coaching process?

While rapport and connection is very important through a coaching process, an effective leadership coach is not your best friend. While they will encourage you and cheer you on through your successes, they also need to be able to hold you to account for behaviours that aren’t helping you succeed and challenge your thinking and your actions. An effective leadership coach understands the difference between what you want to hear, and what you need to hear. They won’t be cold and emotionless – an effective leadership coach will discuss your development needs clearly and specifically, identify a path to develop and grow and guide / help / push you towards action to address shortfalls.

Virtual Executive Leadership Coaching
Great Coaches Balance Rapport With Accountability

Further, ask about their own coaching process. An effective leadership coach knows that they don’t have all of the answers and are developing and growing themselves. An effective leadership has experienced the process of coaching for themselves, they understand the impact, the sticking points in their own development and can discuss it clearly with you. If your chosen coach doesn’t believe in the coaching process, why should you?

Executive Leadership Coach Review:

Ask:

  • ‘How will you challenge me to develop my skills?’
  • ‘What is the process if we disagree on a way forward?’
  • ‘Do you have a coach at present?’
  • ‘What did you learn through your coaching process?’

Through asking some or all of these questions, you should be able to ascertain not only if the person in front of you is an effective leadership coach, but if they are the right leadership coach to assist you in growing and developing as a leader.

The 9 Questions To Ask When Choosing An Executive Leadership Coach

These 9 simple questions will help you identify the good from the bad, the amateur from the professional, the executive leadership coach worth paying for compared to the one that is an expensive waste of time.

How To Choose An Executive Leadership Coach – The 9 Questions

If you are talking or engaging a coach that can’t answer these 9 questions effectively – walk away! There are plenty of highly effective executive leadership coaches who can – and you deserve to work with someone that can back up what they say with action.

How to Develop Quality Leaders in Your Business

If you’re looking to develop quality leaders in your business, you need to start with a leadership assessment. Doing so will help you identify the strengths and weaknesses of your current leaders and provide insights into how they can improve. Once you do, you can begin building their skills through executive coaching or executive development programs. Keep reading to learn how to improve leadership in your organization and help your employees develop the qualities of a good leader from within.

Perform a Leadership Assessment

The first step is to perform a leadership assessment. You can use an online assessment tool like Developing Leaders Velocity Leadership CheckPoint to gain deeper insight into the strengths and weaknesses of your organization’s leaders.

You can also analyse your team members’ leadership effectiveness by asking them to identify the behaviors that make up their leadership style, as well as their strengths in these areas:

  • Planning and organizing (prioritizing tasks, setting goals and objectives)
  • Motivating others (encouraging, delegating effectively)
  • Delegating (giving authority while providing guidance)
  • Leading change (encouraging risk-taking and creativity)

Ensure you also assess whether team members have adequate knowledge of the company’s strategies, policies and procedures so they can lead effectively.

Invest in Leadership Development Programs

While it’s tempting to try to develop your leadership skills on your own or with the help of friends and family, that can be a costly mistake. Instead, invest in leadership development programs designed specifically for employees at different stages of their careers. These programs will help employees identify their strengths and weaknesses as leaders, improve their ability to lead others, and develop the right leadership style based on those strengths and weaknesses.

Leadership programs in Melbourne can also help workers develop their interpersonal skills and improve their communication with colleagues. This will make it easier for people to work together and increase productivity. The cost of leadership development programs can be a significant investment, but it’s an investment that pays off many times over in the long run.

Leaders Understand Their Strengths and Weaknesses – The AIRBLEEDS Model

How do your behave when you are stressed and tired? As leaders, we should know our strengths and weaknesses, particularly when we aren’t at 100%. For me, it is excuses, excuses, and then an awful feeling of shame for not accepting responsibility in the first place. When under stress and tired, even as a leader, these are my default responses that I have to fight against to be more responsible.
Hard to say and harder to acknowledge, but in knowing I can address the behaviour and make better decisions.
What default responses do you fight against when it comes to your team?
Do you:
? Blame others?
? Go lenient on actions where you should be firmer?
? Make excuses for your behaviour or that of others?
? Exonerate behaviour (pretend it didn’t happen when you know it did)?
? Defend your actions or behaviour when you know it should change?
? Shame yourself for your actions you know should be better?

Leaders Understand Their Strengths and Weaknesses

Understanding which of the ‘BLEEDS’ behaviours are your default provides individuals, leaders and team members with a distinct advantage – they can take responsibility and do something about it. Why BLEEDS? Because these behaviours can act like an open wound for a team, rarely spoken about but quietly sapping team members of energy and drive. They can be insidious if not addressed – and the first step is to acknowledge their existence.

Which of the BLEEDS behaviours is your default when under pressure and stress?

And they exist in everyone – without exception.
Teams that understand each others default BLEEDS behaviours can stand for something better, and provide a gift for their team members – clear feedback when they are behaving below their best and that they can change it.
Often, we are in a BLEEDS behaviour and we don’t know it – but the team members around us know clearly – they are often on the receiving end.
When teams can be open, honest and clear with each other regarding team behaviours, the whole team is more efficient and effective.
The first step to this open and honest team behaviour is to look at your own behaviour when it is not at its best.
When under pressure and stress, which 2 BLEEDS behaviours are your default?
Knowing this, who will you share your understanding with?
What can you plan to do the next time you are aware of your behaviour?

Knowing the default BLEEDS behaviours, what to do about them – for yourself and your team members – is what good leaders are capable of.

Family Business In Focus – 4 Legs Petfood

We get to work with some amazing leaders and managers within small business and family business at IMLD. Today is National Family Business Day, and we wanted to highlight some of the amazing family businesses we have the pleasure of working with – today it is 4 Legs Petfood.

4Legs is a proudly family owned Australian business located in Sunshine, Victoria. 4 Legs have been making high quality, all natural, fresh pet food for over 25 years. Their story began when Tony Ratten was scouring supermarket shelves for a fresh, wholesome food to feed the beloved family dog, Coco the Schnauzer. Unable to find what he was looking for, Tony decided to create his own, and 4Legs was born.

The team at 4 Legs work hard to ensure all of their ingredients are sourced from trusted, quality local suppliers and are certified Pet Food Industry Association (PFIAA) members, PrimeSafe audited and Safe Quality Food (SQF) certified. Their food philosophy is simple: they believe that dogs thrive on a diet full of fresh meat and vegetables, an appropriate amount of healthy grains and essential vitamins and minerals – with all of their products being 100% preservative free and without added salt, sugar or colours and flavours.

Leading a Business Is A Family Affair

Leading and managing a family business brings with it some unique situations and challenges that many larger, non-family businesses don’t face. Today, 4Legs is a true family enterprise with all three of Tony’s children working in the business and sharing a passion for crafting delicious and nutritious meals for cherished family pets. At IMLD we have been fortunate to be able to work with CEO John Ratten, Engineering Projects Manager James Ratten and Marketing Manager Olivia Ratten as well as several supervisors and staff as they continue to provide high-quality products for committed dog lovers and owners.

It is clear that the whole family team at 4 Legs Petfood take great pride in creating exceptionally delicious and nutritious food with the aim of helping cherished pet live a longer, healthier and happier lives. On National Family Business Day, we couldn’t be happier partnering with such a dedicated team!

We are proud to be associated with the wonderful team at 4 Legs Petfood, working hard as a successful Victorian family business in the manufacturing industry. If you would like to know how your cherished pet can benefit from the expertise of the team at 4 Legs Petfood, follow their LinkedIn Page or direct to their website at 4legs.com.au.
